Is Sedation Dentistry Right For You?

Sedation Dentistry Naples FL

Most people don’t look forward to their dental visits and, in fact, many actually dread their six-month cleanings and checkups. At Childs and Childs Dentistry, we understand visits to the dentist can cause fear and anxiety, which is why we offer our patients sedation dentistry. With sedation dentistry, those with anxiety, sensitivity, or who need a longer than normal treatment can feel relaxed and stress-free during any procedure and make visits to the dentist more enjoyable.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

  1. Relaxing – Sedation dentistry can help you feel more relaxed during your dental visits. In most cases, patients will be awake, but on the verge of consciousness, and will not remember their visit once the sedation wears off. It’s almost like time traveling to the end of your appointment without any discomfort or anxiety.
  2. It can help anyone – You don’t have to suffer from dental anxiety in order to benefit from sedation dentistry. It can also be a great option for those with sensitive teeth or gag reflexes and experience a lot of discomfort during their visits. If you need a treatment that takes a long time, it is natural to feel restless and impatient, so sedation can help make the procedure feel a lot faster.

Types of Sedation

  • Oral – The most common type of sedation we administer to our patients is oral sedation. We will prescribe you an oral sedative to take about a half an hour before your appointment. The sedation works differently for everyone and may take a while to wear off, so it is important to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
  • Nitrous oxide – Nitrous oxide is easier for us to control, so one of the main benefits of this type of sedation is that you will be completely conscious soon after we turn it off. This is more ideal for anyone who needs to go back to work or get back to his or her day right after their appointment.
  • IV – This type of sedation is the strongest and best for long or invasive dental procedures such as oral surgery. The other types of sedation do not offer pain relief, but IV sedation can make it so you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. You will also be required to have a ride to and from your appointment if you receive IV sedation.

Better Dental Visits

Many people who suffer from dental anxiety and sensitivity will avoid the dentist until they develop major dental concerns. Regular dental visits are vital to helping you maintain your oral health, which is why we offer sedation dentistry to our patients.
