Is a dental implant better than a bridge?

Until recently, you basically had two options for replacing a missing tooth or teeth – a dental bridge or partial denture. These options fill the space left by a missing tooth, but do not actually replace the tooth.

A dental bridge usually consists of a replacement tooth that is attached to two crowns. The crowns support the bridge because they are affixed to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

This option includes alteration of surrounding teeth to accommodate the crowns. A dental bridge is effective, but it requires removal of healthy tooth structure to make sure the crowns fit properly.

Dental implants are a completely independent replacement and surrounding teeth do not need any alteration for them to fit properly. This is preferable because we like to preserve as much of your healthy teeth as possible.

The cost for dental implants is slightly higher than for a bridge, but a dental bridge will eventually need to be replaced, whereas the dental implant is permanent. The restoration portion of a dental implant may need replacement, but with proper care and oral hygiene it will last for many years.

Gulf Shore Cosmetic and Family Dentistry has been placing dental implants for many years with great success. We will be happy to discuss your tooth replacement options and help you decide if dental implants are the right choice for you.
