How effective are teeth whitening toothpastes?
Teeth whitening toothpastes are somewhat effective. All toothpastes contain mild abrasives that help to lift stains from the surface of your teeth. Whitening toothpastes contain chemical agents that polish teeth gently and help with the removal of stains.
However, teeth whitening toothpastes can only help lift mild stains from the surface of your teeth, but they do not contain any bleaching agent, so they will only lighten the color of your teeth by about one shade.
A teeth whitening kit purchased at your local drug store does contain hydrogen peroxide (a bleaching agent.) This helps to remove surface stains as well as some stains deep within your teeth, but since application cannot be controlled by a dentist, the concentration is fairly low.
But home whitening kits purchased over the counter cannot come close to producing the results achieved with a professional teeth whitening treatment done at your dentist’s office. An at-home teeth whitening kit provided by your dentist has a much higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide and can lighten your teeth anywhere from three to eight shades.
Childs and Childs Dentistry offers several options for dramatically whitening your teeth, and we will be happy to answer any of your questions about teeth whitening.
