What is involved with a root canal?

It’s very common for people to have a negative reaction when they think about having a root canal. Unfortunately, root canal treatment has gotten some very bad press, but that is based on experiences or stories that people have heard about treatment in the past. Using updated techniques, having a root canal today does not have to be any more complicated than having your tooth filled.

In many cases, the fear of having a root canal is due to the fact that people don’t really know what it involves. Basically, a root canal is needed when the material inside the root of your tooth becomes infected because of decay or gum disease. If this material is not cleared away, the infection will continue to spread, causing significant pain and, eventually, loss of the tooth.

Root canal treatment itself is pretty straightforward. First we will start by completely numbing the area around the tooth so that you don’t feel any discomfort. We make very tiny holes in the back your tooth so that we can get to the area that’s infected. Once this is done, the infection is completely removed and the tooth is cleaned. Finally, the tooth is filled and sealed to protect it. At Gulf Shore Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we are experts in providing safe and comfortable root canal treatment, and we will make the experience as stress-free as possible.
