I lost a filling. How do I know if it’s an emergency?

If you lose a filling, you definitely need to see us as soon as possible. The best course of action is always to contact our office right away if you are unsure that your situation is considered an emergency. A member of our team is available 24 hours a day by phone and will assess your situation by gathering as much information as possible

In the case of a lost filling, we will most likely be able to see you as soon as possible the next day, but in the meanwhile you can gently rinse out the affected tooth. The main problem with a lost filling is that it can be painful since tender tissue may be exposed. If you are in extreme pain, our on-call team member will try to determine if we need to see you immediately.

Another complication is that the filling provides stability and strengthens the tooth. Losing the filling can cause your tooth to weaken significantly become prone to fracture. Until you get to our office, you should definitely avoid biting down on the tooth to avoid further damage.

At Childs and Childs Dentistry we know how important it is to protect your healthy tooth structure, and we will make sure you get treatment as quickly as possible.
