Why do I need to replace missing teeth?

The main problem with missing teeth is tooth alignment. You may not notice it, but your teeth are constantly moving.

One missing tooth can cause surrounding teeth to gradually drift into the empty space. This movement creates a domino effect, allowing other teeth to begin to shift and move out of proper position. Ultimately you are left with teeth that are severely misaligned.

Misaligned teeth can cause oral health problems like:

  • Grinding or clenching of teeth (bruxism)
  • Abnormal wearing down of teeth
  • TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder)
  • Periodontal disease, potentially causing bone loss
  • Breaking, chipping, or fracturing of teeth

The roots of your teeth also help to stimulate growth of your jawbone. For this reason, losing a tooth can actually lead to deterioration of the jawbone. When this occurs it can change the shape of your face, making you look older, and potentially lead to additional tooth loss.

It is far easier to replace teeth as soon as possible rather than waiting for more damage to occur to your teeth and jaw. You do have options, and Gulf Shore Cosmetic and Family Dentistry will be happy to discuss these options with you and help you make the decision that is right for you.
