Why do I need a root canal?

A root canal is needed when the area inside the root of your tooth becomes infected due to severe decay, periodontal disease or a crack or chip in the tooth. This space contains nerves and pulp, and when the infection penetrates this portion of the tooth, the only way to preserve the tooth is to perform a root canal. If you don’t have root canal treatment, the infection will continue to spread, and the tooth will eventually need to be extracted.

One of the first signs that you need a root canal is pain and tenderness around the affected tooth. A root canal may seem like an unpleasant prospect for many people, but without treatment, this pain will worsen, resulting in loss of the tooth. Root canal treatment will remove the infection and eliminate the source of the pain.

Although root canal treatment is one of the most dreaded of all dental procedures, a root canal performed at Childs and Childs Dentistry is usually no more complicated than having a tooth filled.
