What are the benefits of having a root canal?

Root canals are not a very popular treatment, but they are necessary to save your tooth if the area inside the root becomes infected. Infection may occur because of severe decay, advanced periodontal disease, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, trauma to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

If this infection is not completely cleared away with root canal treatment, the infection will continue to spread. You will continue to experience pain that will worsen as the infection progresses. At this point, the pain can be quite severe, and you have in order two options to relieve the pain – root canal treatment or extraction.

Root canal treatment is the second option, and the benefit is that it will save your tooth. Extraction is only a last-resort option, because a missing tooth leads to a number of other problems that can have a very negative impact on your dental health. At Childs and Childs Dentistry or goal is to protect your oral health by preserving your teeth if at all possible.
