How does teeth whitening work?
There are two types of teeth whitening, and the way they work depends on which is used - take-home kits and professional teeth whitening (done in your dentist’s office.)
Take-Home Kits – The advantage of a take-home whitening kit is that you can use it in the privacy of your home. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and use them to create a custom-made tray that holds the whitening gel.
For best results, you should wear the trays for about 15 or 20 minutes each day for two weeks. Your dentist will instruct you on the proper way to use the kit to achieve the desired results. The extent of whitening achieved depends on the length of time and frequency of treatment.
Professional Teeth Whitening – Professional whitening at your dentist’s office can be done in less than an hour. Your dentist applies a special gel to your gums to protect them from the whitening agent, which can be irritating.
The whitening gel is then applied to the surface of your teeth and cured with a special light. The results achieved with professional whitening are significantly more dramatic – lightening teeth by up to eight shades.
We offer both types of treatments at Childs and Childs Dentistry, and we will be happy to answer any questions you have about which process would be best for you.
